October training – 6 weeks to go!

Terrifyingly this now takes me up to the beginning of October’s training – hampered even further by fieldwork, but managed my longest individual run in addition to my longest distance weekly total for running…..

This was a pretty heavy week for me in terms of mileage, and a hot week weather-wise at that. It also highlighted to me how much easier it is to run with other people when you are doing long distance rather than on your own. The Thursday long run I did on my own, along a very boring straight road to work. The Friday morning I ran a slightly shorter run (by 1.5miles), but with a group. Even with more chatting as we ran, and feeling like I was running slower to match other people’s paces, it was still a fast paced run than my Thursday run. Running on my own is definitely going to be a big challenge for me during the Oman Desert Marathon.

Week 2:

  • Sunday – 4.7mi sand run (48:24, 10:19/mi)
  • Monday – 3.3mi group run (25:04, 7:32/mi)
  • Tuesday – 9.4mi Tuesday Trauma sprints session (1:20:30, 8:35/mi inc. 6x400m sprints)
  • Wednesday – yoga, stretching & rest
  • Thursday – rest (exploring Jebel Akhdar)
  • Friday – 18.6mi long slow lonely run, 7kg pack (3:20:53, 10:46/mi)
  • Saturday – off
  • Total run mileage: 36.0 miles (57.9km)
  • Total bike mileage: 0
October week 2 - trying to work out how to have my hair to avoid the mother of all tangles after running with a plait. Forearm yoga balances...... still a work in progress! MRR Tuesday Trauma group - session led by me this week!

It was a national holiday week to celebrate the Eid holiday, so I didn’t have to cycle commute!!! Yay! I fully welcomed a week off my bike after the last few weeks. As Niall was away, I decided to rent a car for the week, give my cycling legs a rest, and to let me go shopping as and when I wanted!! I got very burnt on my long run; I did a “mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun” run, because I knew that I’d have to be running at around that time of the day during the race, rather than at our usual long run start time of 5.30am! But I forgot to put on my suncream :( My body suffered a lot after this run – not so much my muscles and joints, they were fine after a sit down and re-fuel, but the sore patches on my sides and back definitely got worse after this run. Need to somehow find a way to  minimize the impact of this for race week.

Long run perils. Sunburn, raw skin, and more sunburn. Thank goodness for Sudocrem and Nivea!

October Week 3 - gym time in Duqm, calm seas for sampling and a smile at the end of a boring solo long run

October week 3 – gym time in Duqm, calm seas for sampling and a smile at the end of a boring solo long run

This week was not great for training, as I suspected it might be. After a long day in the field out in the sun, finding time to train is difficult. Particularly when dinner at the hotel is the only option, and has a fairly limited time-window in which you can eat. Enough excuses…. Must try harder next time! I did at least manage 1 treadmill session! The day we spent driving back was frustrating as I was hoping to be back in time to cycle home from the office, but the drive took longer than planned, plus we then had to unload, unpack and rinse all the sampling equipment before we could head home, particularly as both of us responsible were going to be out of the office the following week too. This week I have confirmed that long, solo runs along the roads at my end of town are borrrrrring!

Week 4:

  • Sunday – travel to Dubai, offshore medical. 10km evening walk.
  • Monday – 5.2mi treadmill run (40:00, 7:41/mi), Hydrogen Sulphide safety course
  • Tuesday – 10mi treadmill run (1:25:46, 8:34/mi), BOSIET course
  • Wednesday – BOSIET course
  • Thursday – BOSIET course, travel back to Muscat
  • Friday – 9.6mi run with 6kg pack (1:38:59, 10:20)
  • Saturday – exploring in the mountains
  • Total run mileage: 24.8 miles (39.9km)
  • Total bike mileage: 0

October week 4 - Helicopter Underwater Escape Training day, accidental 10km walk around Dubai Creek, more hotel treadmill time

Another 0km bike week, but a fun (if tiring) week in Dubai. We needed to do our Hydrogen Sulphide safety and BOSIET (Basic Offshore Survival Induction and Emergency Training) courses for some offshore fieldwork we have coming up, so we headed over to Dubai, to have our UK Oil & Gas certified medicals done, and to do the training. The training included HUET training (Helicopter Underwater Escape Training), where they put you in a helicopter simulator, strap you into a 4-point harness, submerge you, capsize you, and then you have to escape through the window. There were more than a few non-swimmers in the group – it must have been absolutely terrifying for them! We had the advantage of both being divers, so used to using breathing apparatus (for one of the exercises), and used to being underwater. Being very blind without my glasses on did not help though! Did an accidental very long walk on the first evening there – did that thing where we had a lovely little walk to dinner, and carried on walking after dinner. And then realised that we needed to walk all the way back to the hotel. In cheap, flat flipflops. My feet were a) quite sore and b) very, very dirty when we got back to the hotel!

Week 5:

  • Sunday – 3.9mi mountain trail run (50:48, 13:00/mi, 3000ft ascent)
  • Monday – 14.6mi road bike commute (46:31), 7.8mi bike to run and back, 4.6mi hilly group run (39:17, 8:37/mi)
  • Tuesday – 14.6mi road bike commute (47:38), 3.4mi bike to run, 6.9mi hill reps session with pack (1:09:48, 10:03/mi)
  • Wednesday – 2×14.6mi road bike commute (46:38, 45:49)
  • Thursday – 6.3mi partial commute run with pack (1:01:48, 9:45/mi)
  • Friday – slacklining, stretching and rest
  • {Saturday – 4.6mi run with pack, (44:49, 9:47/mi), slacklining}
  • Total run mileage: 26.3 miles (42.3km)
  • Total bike mileage: 69.6miles (112.0km)

October week 5 - making the most of time in the mountains. I ran from the other side of the ridge (where the road disappears in the distance), slacklife - I've now managed 5 steps in a row!

Taper-tastic! I have had to really remind myself during this week, and the last part of the previous week that it’s OK not to be doing the distances that I’ve been trying to do for the last month or so, and that actually it’s more beneficial for me to do some tapering. I’ve carried on doing the shorter runs at a slightly faster pace in addition to a hills or sprints session once a week. This week started with everything being hilly though! Also a success on the raw sides front – by the simple expedient of tucking in my tshirt to my shorts (sexy) from the  beginning of my run, I’ve discovered that the bag/short/tshirt combo doesn’t seem to rub nearly as much. Phew…..

  • Total run mileage for October: 138.4 miles (222.7km)
  • Total bike mileage for October: 131 miles (210.8km)

Fingers crossed I have this running training malarkey covered……. One week to go!
